Global chemicals and energy company Sasol Ltd has appointed Muriel Dube as the new Chair of the Board, effective from September 13, 2024.

Dube, who has been on Sasol’s board since 2018 as an independent non-executive director, succeeds Stephen Westwell, who stepped down in May 2024 after 12 years of service.

Who is Muriel Dube?

Dube holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Change and Management from Oxford University, she also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Human Sciences and a BA Honours in Politics.

She has held several high-profile roles in both the public and private sectors, including serving as South Africa’s chief negotiator in climate change negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

She was also the director of Atmospheric Protection and Chemicals Management at the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism.

In addition to her government roles, Dube has held executive positions in notable companies. For instance, she was the Group Commercial Director at Bidvest Group and served as an investment banker at Investec plc. The new chair also served at Nozala Investments as CEO

Currently, Dube is a non-executive director at the UK Infrastructure Bank, further expanding her global reach and influence.

Board reshuffles and new leadership roles

Alongside Dube’s appointment, Sasol made a couple of other changes to its board and committees.  The multinational named Dr Martina Flöel the new Lead Independent Director, replacing Dube who will transition to the chairperson role,

Other appointments include David Eyton, an independent non-executive director, as Chairman of the Safety, Social, and Ethics Committee. Eyton will also serve in the Audit and Nomination and Governance Committees.

To take up his new positions, Eyton, however, stepped down from his role on the Remuneration Committee, with Katherine Harper, another independent non-executive director, taking his place.

These leadership changes come at a time for Sasol, is pushing for environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices, in line with global energy transitions. Dube armed with extensive experience in various leadership positions, is expected to steer the company towards a greener and more sustainable future.

In a statement, Dube expressed confidence in her ability to lead the board and the board’s collective ability to drive Sasol’s growth.

“The Board’s depth, expertise, and experience will continue to benefit Sasol as we progress into the future,” Dube said following her appointment.

As Sasol strives for a sustainable future, Dube’s leadership is expected to drive the company’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
