Where it started
Adjei was born in 1943 in Nkonya Ntsumuru, located in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. He was raised in Bonuama, a small town near Asankragua in the Amenfi Central District.
This rural setting shaped the first thirteen years of his life, far removed from the urban bustle. Raised by a single parent, Adjei faced the challenges typical of a humble upbringing, including limited access to educational resources. Despite these challenges, he was determined to create a better life for himself and his family.
His early education was modest, and due to financial constraints, he couldn’t pursue further education immediately after completing form four. However, Adjei’s resilience shone through as he earned an O-Level education through self-study and perseverance.
He continued his education at the Institute of Adult Education while working at the Volta Aluminum Company (VALCO). This dual commitment to work and study demonstrated his determination to improve his circumstances.
Adjei’s quest for knowledge didn’t stop there. He pursued a three-year course at Harvard Business School on the Owner, President, and Management (OPM) program, an experience that broadened his business acumen.
He later attended the University of Ghana, Legon, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Psychology in 1970. His academic journey culminated with a Ph.D. in Research Methods & Statistics in Psychology from the University of Strathclyde in 1973. This extensive education laid a strong foundation for his future business endeavors.
The birth of Kasapreko
Armed with an ambition to succeed, Adjei founded Kasapreko Company Limited in 1989. The company started in a converted garage in Nungua, a suburb of Accra, with just five employees. Adjei used his savings from working at VALCO to fund the initial stages of the business.
His vision was to provide quality and affordable drinks to Ghanaians, meeting the growing demand for high-quality alcoholic products. Unlike many competitors who relied on imported ingredients, Kasapreko focused on creating herbal-based alcoholic beverages sourced from local ingredients.
The early days of Kasapreko were challenging. Adjei described the first five years of production as more of a hobby than a business, as he experimented with different products and formulas.
The breakthrough came when Kasapreko sold its first 25 cartons of Alomo Bitters, a herbal-based alcoholic drink that would become the company’s flagship product. This sale transformed Adjei’s perception of the business, igniting his vision of producing millions of cartons to cater to both local and international markets.
Kasapreko was among the first companies to set up a liquor distillation business in Nungua, breaking away from the traditional methods used by other producers.
The company differentiated itself by sourcing unique inputs and creating blends distinct from its competitors. This innovation helped Kasapreko carve out a niche market and set the stage for its expansion.
Growth and expansion
Today, Kasapreko is a leading manufacturer in Ghana and exports to 16 countries worldwide, including Nigeria, the company’s largest export market. The product range has expanded significantly, including bitters, whisky, gin, liqueur, brandy, carbonated soft drinks, and wine.
Some of the notable products include K20 Whisky, Tonic Wine, Carnival Strawberry, Storm Energy Drink, Awake Drinking Water, Royal Drinks, Veraldo, and Puma Drinks.
Kasapreko’s commitment to quality and innovation has been recognized internationally. In 2013, CNN named Alomo Bitters one of the top five emerging drink brands.
The company has also received numerous awards, such as the Manufacturing Company of the Year by the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana in 2013 and the Outstanding Alcoholic Beverage Company of the Year in 2019.
Adjei has always been keen on maintaining the originality and quality of Kasapreko’s products. This commitment led him to Germany to acquire customized bottles for Kasapreko drinks and to London for additional flavorings. These efforts ensured that the brand remained distinct and appealing to its growing customer base.
In 2023, Kasapreko expanded into Kenya, facilitated by Canary International Trading Company Limited, a subsidiary of the Canary Group of Companies. This move was part of the company’s strategy to broaden its footprint in Africa and beyond.
Challenges
Despite its success, Kasapreko’s journey was not without challenges. One of the significant hurdles was accessing funding. Many banks were reluctant to finance a new business venture, especially one in the alcohol industry.
Adjei faced numerous rejections before finally finding support through EMPRETEC, a United Nations program that supports entrepreneurs in developing countries. He also received valuable advice from Alan Kyerematen, who recommended focusing on local banks for loans rather than foreign ones.
Market penetration was another challenge. In the early days, Adjei personally took samples of Kasapreko products to retail shops across Accra, often facing rejection. This experience motivated him to develop more effective marketing strategies and to focus on building a strong brand identity.
Philanthropy
Beyond business, Adjei and Kasapreko have been actively involved in philanthropy and community development. The One4Life project, associated with Kasapreko’s Awake Purified Drinking Water, directs a portion of sales proceeds to support patients with heart conditions at the Cardiothoracic Center. This initiative reflects Kasapreko’s commitment to public health and community welfare.
Adjei also established the Kwabena Adjei Educational Endowment Fund (KAEEF), which provides scholarships for students in various senior secondary schools and universities in Ghana. This fund is part of his broader effort to give back to the community and support the next generation of leaders.
In his hometown of Bonuama, Adjei has contributed to rural development by establishing schools, health facilities, and providing water and electricity. His contributions have transformed the village into a beacon of rural development, showcasing the impact of successful local entrepreneurship.
Awards and recognitions
Adjei’s achievements have been widely recognized. In 2016, he received the Master Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the West African edition of Ernst & Young (EY) World Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
In 2017, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ghana Manufacturing Awards. Additionally, in 2019, he was named the overall Best Industrialist at the Made-in-Ghana Awards.
Kasapreko has also been consistently recognized for its contributions to the industry. The company received the Gold Award in 2010 for its export achievements and was named Exporter of the Year two years later.
In 2023, Kasapreko was honored by President Nana Addo at the National Honors and Awards ceremony for its role in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, including the production of hand sanitizers during the crisis.
Adjei’s journey from a rural village to leading a global beverage company is a testament to his resilience, vision, and commitment to quality. Kasapreko’s growth from a small startup to a major industry player reflects the potential of local entrepreneurship to drive economic growth and create lasting social impact.
Through his business acumen and philanthropic efforts, Adjei has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s beverage industry and continues to inspire future generations.
His story underscores the importance of perseverance, innovation, and giving back to the community, reminding us that true success is measured not just by business achievements but also by the positive change we bring to the world.
